Christian or Disciple?

                Acts 11:26b

And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

Luke 14:27

And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

One thing that I have learned, over the past three years, is that the true definition for Christian has been altered and watered down.  As I talk to many people on the streets of Las Vegas, I hear many definitions for what a Christian is supposed to be.  The most common definition is someone who believes in Jesus Christ.  Many people claim a belief in Jesus Christ but their life does not reflect the new birth of salvation.  There is possibly a vast majority of people that claim to be Christians, but  are pretenders to the name.  Unfortunately it is because of the watered down name of Christianity, that non-religious people mock those who claim to be Christian.

If we are a Christian nation like evangelicals like to tell us loudly, then why do we have so many problems?  Is it because we cannot reconcile those small differences in the Bible and the studying of the Holy Book while following Christianity,….Or is it that we pay lip service to our religious beliefs and then go back to our human instincts and do what is in the best interest of ourselves?                                                          Lake Minnetonka Liberty

I recently realized that when Christ spoke to those who followed him, He did not call them to be a Christians, but instead He called them to be His disciple.  In America the term Christian most often means a person who has asked Jesus Christ into their heart through a prayer.  But the problem with this definition of Christianity is that it often points to a completion or arrival.  Christ never meant for us to arrive in our salvation this side of eternity.  An individual who has based their life on a simple prayer of asking Christ into their life, and yet is not convicted to have Christ at the center of their life, priorities, and goals, has used the prayer as lip service.  Instead a born again believer has a heart of repentance and then lives each day for the Lord.

The Bible only mentions the term “Christian” three times; Acts 11:26, Acts 26:28, and I Peter 4:16.  The two times Christian is mentioned in Acts, it is a term that the Gentiles used for the followers of Christ, but it’s used to be derogatory.  In I Peter, the term of Christian is used as Peter talks to the church.  Peter is telling the faithful about the persecution and martyrdom that may happen as they live their life as a Christian.

The biggest frustration that I have is that the term Christian has been adopted by so many other religions.  Because there are so many people who call themselves a Christian, it’s unclear if a Christian is someone who’s prayed the sinner’s prayer, a Catholic, a Mormon, a Jehovah Witness, or is it a repentant born again believer?  As a disciple of Christ there is a clearer picture of denial, obedience, and direction.  Since the name “Christian” has been drastically changed in America, but the term used by Christ for his followers was “disciple”, I plan to call myself a disciple of Christ.  Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that it is a bad thing to be known as a Christian.  But the term Christian could mean so many different things that the person you speak with still does not know who you are.  For the remainder of the article I want to clearly outline the marks of a disciple from the words of Christ.

Deny Himself, Take up his Cross Daily, and Follow Him

Luke 9:23-25

And he said to [them] all, If any [man] will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?

From the moment of turning from sin and to Christ, there are several things that happen within the life of a disciple.  Christ talks about these three things in vs. 23; deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Christ.  So what does it mean to do these?

To deny yourself means that there is a turning away from your interests and to the interests of Christ.  This term of denial was used by Christ to tell the disciples they would need to put Christ as the top priority of their life.  A disciple does not consider his interests as the top priority, but instead his top interests are the Kingdom and will of the Father (Matthew 6:10)

This same Greek word was also used by Christ, when He told Peter that he would be denied three times before the rooster crowed, while Peter refused to believe Christ.  Within twelve hours Peter denies Jesus three times and is emotionally destroyed because he feels he no longer deserves to be a disciple.  Then prior to Christ’s ascension we see Peter get reinstated.  Three times Jesus asks Peter if he loves him.  Each question is followed by a command of devotion to the brethren (Feed my Lambs…Tend my sheep).  Jesus is clearly defining for Peter that to love Christ you must be devoted to the brethren, and to be devoted to the brethren you must deny yourself.

The second section is to take up your cross daily.  The cross was the punishment given to the worst criminals by the Phoenicians, Greeks, and Romans.  It was a form of justice that these governments felt necessary to evoke on the most evil criminals.  The cross was also the punishment that Christ received for the totality of the sins of the saints.  Each saint should have received this punishment for their sins, but Christ chose to take the punishment instead.  Taking up our cross daily, describes the process of fighting against our sin each and every day.  If we are born again, there is a desire to not sin and instead to fight against our flesh that desires to sin.  To overcome our flesh we must be in battle to mortify and bring to extinction the selfish deeds of the body (Romans 8:13).  And the goal is not to do this occasionally but each and every day.

The final call is to follow Christ.  To follow after Christ means that you attach yourself in identification with Christ, you conform to the example of Christ, and you live for Christ even if it is to death.  The purpose of life is to be identified with Christ through your example of being like Him.  It is true that our life should be a testimony of Christ but our testimony is not going to be by our walk alone.  I know a particular friend who is a football fanatic.  I know this because all he talks about is football.  I know another friend who is a fitness fanatic.  I know this because she is always working out, eating right, and talking about fitness.  So why is it that so many Christians feel that it is enough to identify ourselves through attending church, reading the word, and praying in private, but never to speak publicly about their identification with Christ?

Outreach Opportunities

Calvary Downtown Outreach - Clothing Ministry

This month marks the three year anniversary of being on the streets of Las Vegas to share the gospel.  The Lord has been very gracious in providing locations to share the gospel and faithful saints to be out on the streets.  What we did not anticipate is that the Lord would open new doors to share the gospel in places outside of The Strip and Fremont Street Experience.

For a couple of years, members of the Las Vegas Outreach Team (LVOT) have been getting together with members of Calvary Downtown Outreach.  It was November 4, 2005 when we were first introduced to the First Friday Art Fair by John Laporte, Pastor for Calvary Downtown Outreach.  That particular night we found a new location to share the gospel to people who needed to hear the Good News.  After that night, we began to join John Laporte on Friday nights at the Fremont Street Experience.

The last couple of years the friendship with Calvary Downtown Outreach has been very fruitful.  One of the greatest things that LVOT has received from Calvary Downtown Outreach is the example of endurance in reaching so many people with the gospel.  At this time Calvary Downtown Outreach leads several outreaches.

  • Sunday Night              6:00-7:00       Chapel Service
              • The Salvation Army Chapel
  • Friday Morning           9:00-11:00     Clothing Ministry
              • Holy Trinity AME Church
  •  Saturday Morning      9:00-12:00     Food and Service Outreach
              • Holy Trinity AME Church

Recently two brothers that work with the Las Vegas Outreach Team, Frank Francesco and Drew Pettiti began attending the Calvary Downtown Outreach Clothing Ministry.  Their stories of ministering to the men and women have been very rich.

On the average Friday 80-100 people come through to receive clothing, toiletry supplies, and prayer.  Each male is allowed to pick one set of clothes each week while the ladies are allowed two sets.  From there the people receive whatever toiletries they need.  The final stop is the prayer tables.  As someone comes to the table they are asked if they have any prayer concerns.  These prayer concerns are written on a 3” by 5” note card and held for future weeks.

Frank and Drew typically work at the prayer tables and use their time to share the gospel.  Frank says that he is able to lay several tracts and booklets on the table, and encourages the people to take whatever interests them.  Often this simple suggestion, leads to a chance to share the gospel and encourage them to repent of their sins and follow Christ.

If you feel lead to help with this outreach, either by coming to work the prayer tables or donating clothes, please call the Executive Director for Calvary Downtown Outreach Theresa Hicks (686-2686).  Otherwise, please help by praying for those who come through the outreach and the volunteers that are there every week.

Team Outreach

Chinese New Year

Sometimes the Spirit moves and there is little time to get ready.  A few weeks ago Sheila Gillespie sent an e-mail to the rest of the Las Vegas Outreach Coordinators asking them about the February 17th Chinese New Year Celebration.  She wanted to know if this event would make a good Team Outreach.  At the last Coordinators Meeting the members agreed that this event would be good for a Team Outreach, so here we go!

We will meet at the parking lot of NEDCO Supply (4200 W. Spring Mountain Rd.) at 1:00 pm.  In the parking lot we will begin a time of prayer at 1:15 pm.  After prayer, we’ll walk together as a team down to the entrance of the event.  The cost to get into the event is $3 for adults and $1 for children 6-12.  Since there is a charge to get into this event we plan to work in stealth mode.  That means we will try to avoid being spotted by security, and if someone is ask to stop passing out tracts they must comply.  Once inside the event we will break up into smaller teams and try to canvas the event with the tracts.  Please bring your cell phone so that we can be in touch with all members.  We want to make sure that we do not leave any soldiers behind.  Feel free to come out for an hour or several hours.

Frank Francesco has ordered up Chinese and Japanese gospel tracts for this event.  We plan to hand out both a Chinese or Japanese tract along with an English tract to the people.  The Team Coordinators will provide all of the tracts for this event so you do not have to worry about bring tracts unless you want to.

Please e-mail Doug & Jen Koch at Doug70_7@hotmail.com if you are interested in participating in this outreach.
